Marquetry

Although wood is the most material used with inlays, there are other materials used in this trade/ tradition such as bones, mother of pearl, ivory and other metals. The most common metal used are copper, pewter, and precious metals such as silver and semi-precious stones. Fine wood called veneer is used on which the paper pattern is attached, and then the pattern is cut with a very thin saw bow. The pieces are then put together in place, like a jigsaw puzzle. When all the pieces are in place they are joined together and everything is glued on a base of wood, which forms the requested pattern. After the pattern is refined and polished.
